I suppose that, in and of itself, should give an indication of what life is like with teens - full and busy and wonderful and, consequently, not a lot of down time. Also, it seems I am perpetually behind on everything in my life. BUT I love doing these New Years posts because it's such a nice way to look back at the past year and get an idea of my Boquinhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02365252326911270689noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847226686813011212.post-5506017639547555052018-05-11T15:13:00.004-04:002018-05-11T15:13:42.179-04:00The Anything But Books TagKate wrote a blog post a while ago with this title, and at the end, like she is wont to do, she challenged people to come up with their own lists. Since it's been a while since I've posted anything (Wow, life is busy!) I decided to do it on our blog instead of just in her blog comments. I actually wrote this post right after Kate did hers, but only now got around to posting it.
Here goes!
What Dr. Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05183182119832345967noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847226686813011212.post-30251020132337577892018-01-24T19:16:00.003-05:002018-01-25T18:42:40.509-05:00The Grammys Are Coming - All the PartsIn past years, I've done a four-part series on the big awards at the Grammys, but this year, I didn't have it in me to do separate posts. I did actually listen to all the nominees for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist, and I'm going to put all of my thoughts in this one, monster post. Skim if you'd like. Read in depth. Whatever. I just decided that sinceDr. Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05183182119832345967noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847226686813011212.post-13415327156975409322018-01-22T22:56:00.000-05:002018-01-22T22:56:34.200-05:00Living the DreamA week ago, our family attended a celebration of diversity and poetry for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. One of the slam poets that night said, "Raise your hand if you have a dream."I hesitated and gave it thought. I didn't raise my hand. It felt like the kind of thing you *should* respond to with a raised hand, but I didn't.
The thing is, I didn't feel wrong or uninspired or depressed. I mean, Boquinhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02365252326911270689noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847226686813011212.post-26817455033233546992018-01-07T20:48:00.000-05:002018-01-07T20:48:19.949-05:00(Mark's) Year in Review - 2017I do this post every year, and if I'm being honest, it's just something fun to do to remember the past year, mixed with some reflections and possibly some new resolve. For many reasons, I've felt a draw to doing this post more than in the past. I know I've felt like I really need to do this post to clear my head and set myself straight for the year. So, with all of that build up, here'sDr. Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05183182119832345967noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847226686813011212.post-37994553228115721212018-01-07T20:46:00.002-05:002018-01-07T20:46:37.702-05:00Year in Review - 2017 (Stacy)
What did you do in 2017 that you’d never done before? Dealt with my husband having emergency abdominal surgery followed by 2 bouts of ensuing infections. Started touring colleges with my daughter. Saw my kids (Kate first followed by Max) discover a love of performing. Went on a trip to NYC with my son to see "Waitress" and met Jason Mraz! Attended a "Gilmore Girls Festival" in CT with my family Boquinhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02365252326911270689noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847226686813011212.post-83658805954831315072017-10-26T13:32:00.004-04:002017-10-26T17:50:43.448-04:00A Weekend in Stars Hollow
We got to spend a magical time in Stars Hollow, CT. We spent time talking and taking photos with cast and crew members. We stayed in a lovely Connecticut home (the owner even had a box of big, delicious muffins waiting for us). We got to attend so many great panels and activities. The weather was perfect and the fall foliage was beautiful. It. Was. Wonderful.

It's been a stressful and difficult summer. Between Mark's surgery and then dealing with 2 rounds of c. diff colitis, it was over 2 months of health stress - pretty much June, July and well into August. We're so glad he's doing better and that we're getting back on track.

J.R.R. Tolkien: I'm a big fan of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I remember my mother reading The Hobbit and telling the story to us chapter by chapter when I was way too little to read a book like that by myself. I remember finally picking up LOTR and reading from beginning to end in college. In the middle of a busy semester with all kinds of Japanese to read and translate, and papers Dr. Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05183182119832345967noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847226686813011212.post-78127880755313438992017-03-28T21:13:00.003-04:002017-03-28T21:13:37.707-04:00FrugalityWe are, by choice, primarily a one-income family. International Women's Day. I thought I'd come up with a list of qualities I admire in women and maybe even the people I know who embody them.
1. Builds others up - I've come to appreciate women who take the time and energy to build each other up instead of tearing each other down or being critical. I think I took for granted the idea that all women are catty or petty, or that Boquinhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02365252326911270689noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847226686813011212.post-8424459625291078082017-02-22T10:38:00.000-05:002017-02-23T09:59:26.227-05:00What makes a house a home? This morning, I got up and showered, took Kate to her college classes, came home and cuddled with the dog, had some breakfast, and then got ready to sit down and take care of emails (which is a catch-all phrase for family stuff/scheduling/schooling/appointments/correspondence/errands/to-do lists, etc.). Sometimes we celebrate it. Sometimes we don't. Sometimes we do something like a kids' party or daily love notes and sometimes we're super low-key about it. We usually do something, but what's nice is that we tend to be on the same page.
This past year, I put up daily hearts on the kids' bedroom doors as well as on ours (for Mark) telling Boquinhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02365252326911270689noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847226686813011212.post-79331597981048808262017-02-11T00:34:00.000-05:002017-02-12T20:44:29.092-05:00The Grammys Are Coming--Part 4 (2017)The category I saved for last is Album of the Year. Mostly, I was trying to buy myself some time since I wasn't familiar with four of the albums, and one is old enough that I had to completely remind myself of it. I think there is a clear winner in this group, but there have been surprises before. Overall, I'm sort of underwhelmed by the choices this year, and I'm not sure if that's just my Dr. Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05183182119832345967noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4847226686813011212.post-81246729345370441922017-02-08T15:46:00.000-05:002017-02-10T16:28:26.728-05:00The Grammys Are Coming--Part 3 (2017)So now we come to the Record of the Year. This is probably the hardest one for me to predict because defining the difference between it and the Song of the Year is not very easy for me. I tend to judge them all very similarly. It's kind of easy when a bunch of the songs appear in both categories, but let's not kid ourselves. I'm going with my gut on this one.

So, last year, I knew 4 of the 5 artists nominated for the Best New Artist Catgory. I had opinions on several, so it was really easy to take a listen and decide what I thought. This year, I have heard of two, and wasn't very familiar with anyone's work. This was challenging for me.

Plus, this year the top four categories are filled with selections that were under my radar. It's been interesting to review these for sure. Trump/Bannon . . . what a nightmare. This isn't the America we all know and love. I can't believe that all the protests we're seeing in the streets aren't images of some foreign country but of right here in the USA. If there is one good thing to come from a Trump presidency (that's hard to say), it's that people are awake and involved.

Yeah, that didn't happen. I did do a few posts on music, which I really enjoy, but I didn't do enough to chronicle our wonderful (and sometimes hectic) life.
