More thoughts, because why not

There are more and more incidents in the news
about local convenience stores being held up at gun point.
It's sad. I think it's a sign of desperation.
This economy is really messing with people.

---------------

I struggle every winter.
I've been feeling down and
my friend Linda knew it,
so she brought us a home-cooked meal,
complete with Valentines and treats for the kids.
That really touched me.
We really don't get home cooked meals
(besides our own) much at all.
So that was a real pick-me-up.

----------------

Our kids both got haircuts and,
wow, are they looking grown up!

---------------

Our favorite old-fashioned ice cream shop
is closing this month.
We're so sad about it.
We went today to visit the owner
and she cried when she saw us.
It made us cry, too.

---------------

Thing 1 knows what she wants for her birthday dinner:
Bacalhau A Gomes De Sa
(Portuguese Codfish with potatoes and onions)
Yum!

---------------

I think the BSA is passing the buck.
Stand for something, you know?
Such bullcrap.
Saw a comment online that hit the nail on the head:
" . . . does their sexual orientation make them any less capable
of building a fire or a pinewood derby car
 or offering community service?"
Seriously.
It's 2013. History will show what a shame it all is.
I want to be on the right side of history.

--------------

I loved having penpals as a kid.
Our kids have several penpals -
some by mail and some by email,
both in the US and in other countries
(Japan and the Ukraine).

---------------

Did you know Ed Sheeran has a song
called "Small Bump" that is about a pregnancy
 that ends in miscarriage?
Heard it yesterday and cried,
for the first time in a long time,
about my first pregnancy that ended
in a heartbreaking miscarriage.

---------------

Whenever I start a book,
I get to know the book by reading the back,
the flaps (if it's a hardcover),
the praise, the acknowledgements,
the dedication, about the author, etc.
I hardly ever just dive right in.
What about you?

---------------

We haven't ever paid for cable
(more than the EXTREMELY basic one
 that gets you networks).
We figured out that over the years,
by not getting cable,
we've saved about 10K.

---------------

It occurs to me that when people come visit us,
they are not getting a feel of how things are here
 day to day,
since we pretty much drop most "routined" things
and focus on enjoying our guests.

-----------------

I often cry when people cry.

-----------------

The kids got Valentines and treats in the mail
from Grandma.
So fun.
 I miss having grandparents.
I haven't had grandparents in about 20 years.

---------------

What are you doing (if anything) for Valentine's Day?

It really is scary sometimes to look around and see how everyone is struggling. It was really sad to visit the ice cream shop today, but I'm glad we went.

Ed Sheeran is an incredible songwriter. It's hard to believe he's so young and yet has such depth in his music. I can't wait to see him this summer. And you're right, that song is very touching.

Ellen said something on the Boy Scouts postponing their vote. It was fabulous!

Linda sounds like a nice person.

Bacalhua A Gomes De Sa—which part means potatoes?

I did not know that about the miscarriage. I’m sorry. Last night I let my 8 year old know it’s okay to cry. It can help you feel better.

I dive right in, but eventually end up reading all the flaps and stuff.

I’ve never paid for cable. Sometimes I wish we had it, but most of the time I’m fine without it.

I need to pick up my Valentine’s gifts to Joy and the girls tonight on my way home from work. I was told they would be ready by then.

I don’t know what we’re doing for Valentine's Day. Joy said it’s a surprise. I like surprises.

Is the ice cream shop called Kettering? I loved that place and I'm not a huge ice cream fan. First and last time I ever let someone else taste my ice cream when Thing 2 leaned over and licked my ice cream cone before I ever saw it coming.
I love to read the book jacket before starting the book. Sometimes that is how I choose a book at the library. I want to know more about the author, background, etc before starting.
Glad you got the little valentine in time. Hope you all passed the quiz. Gary and I are going out to Buon Appetito for dinner tonight and then coming home to watch "The Importance of being Ernest" on TV.

Ditto, Mark!

Kim, that is AWESOME. I love it. She is spot on.

Jimmy, the name of the dish comes from the name of a person. "Batata" is potato in Portuguese.

So, can you say now what you got them?

Yes, Vivian. It's called Kettering Corner. We are SO sad. I'm with you - not a huge ice cream fan, but something about that place and Darby (the woman who runs it) makes it extra special. We'll really miss her. Rumor has it someone will take it over - I hope they do a great job with it.

You and I are a like with the book thing. :)

We all passed the quiz - super cute! Your night sounds great - hope it was.

Follow up--I got Joy an assortment of chocolate dipped strawberries (white chocolate, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, striped) and the girls chocolate teddy bears from Buffet's. They were so good. (I never actually got a strawberry, but I heard they were so good.)

Jimmy, that sounds delicious (especially the dark chocolate)!

P.S. Vivian, that's really funny, because that's very out of character for Thing 2. As he gets older, he's less keen on any food sharing, especially if someone has already eaten off of it/tasted it/etc. :P
