A Story About Pies

I wanted to share a cute Max story and today seems like an appropriate day to do it. Sometime this past year, Max said something about Shepherd's pie (a meal that I find kind of bleh/just okay) and since it's not something we make a lot at all, I was surprised by his comment, "You know how much I love shepherd's pie!" I did? I had no idea! I felt like a cruddy mom for not knowing that. But seriously, really? Since when?? Why did that not sound familiar??

So, a few weeks later, we had mashed potato leftovers as well as some meat to use, so I figured, perfect! I'll make shepherd's pie! So I did. And I was so excited to serve it because, after all he loves it, right?

So, I serve the meal, eagerly watching for his response and feeling like such a great mom for making a meal he is so excited about, and he looks at it and says, "What's this?" And I said, "Shepherd's pie!" And he excitedly said, "Oh! Awesome!"

And then he seemed confused, like he was trying to piece something together. He said it seemed different and was trying to remember how it was before. Then he mentioned how he especially liked how a friend of ours made it. Huh? She never made shepherd's pie. Did she? (I started to second guess myself).

Turns out? Chicken pot pie!! NOT shepherd's pie. We all busted up laughing and ate it anyway. So, happy Pi Day and eat something round. Like chicken pot pie and not shepherd's pie.

We make Shepherds Pile, which is like Shepherds Pie, but we just stack mashed potatoes, ground beef and onions, and vegetables in that order. All the flavor but way less work. My kids like it with cheese on top and I cover mine in hot sauce. Last night I had chicken pot pie. Happy Pi day to you all!

Yum! Cheese makes ANYTHING better. Smart kids. ;) Oh, and hot sauce, mmmmmm. Big fans of spice. Happy Pi Day to you, too! We made Toll House Pie. :)

I will come to your house and eat all the shepherd's pie if there are still any leftovers because I love it :P

A for effort! I don't think I've ever had a homemade chicken pot pie. I've only eaten frozen ones from Marie Callenders or the ones at KFC. I bet your shepherd's Pie was better than either of those.

Nevillegirl! You are welcome to come over and eat, not only Shepherd's pie, but anything we make. :)

Jimmy! Thanks. I've had homemade chicken pot pie and it was delicious. I haven't made it yet, though, and I know someone who would appreciate me trying it out! :P (And thanks - I'd like to think so, too). :)

I love chicken pot pie, but I love shepherds pie even more! Bill grew up thinking shepherds pie was called china pie, because that's what his mom called it. He has no idea where it came from, but didn't know that most of the world called it shepherds pie until I told him .:)

China pie! I wonder why. The best I can come up with is wondering if someone misheard the word "Shepherd's?" Is it made with the same ingredients?

Yes, it was basically the same ingredients as shepherds pie. He has no idea. My siblings and I grew up thinking raman noodles were called Zoopsoup, despite what the package said. We didn't figure out that it wasn't until we were in our late teens. I feel like we're decently intelligent people, so it's baffling that it took us so long. We have no idea where the name came from either. We've asked our parents, but they don't know.

Okay, that's funny. I love when people have weird, made-up nicknames like that. I can never remember the difference between sunny-side up eggs and poached eggs and fried eggs and over-easy eggs, so I just call them "dippy eggs." :)

Ha! I think that's an appropriate name!
