Dentistry Question

Has anyone ever gotten a cavity or two filled and then had pain while eating for several weeks afterward? And in that time, visited the dentist TWICE to have him scratch his head trying to figure out what could possibly be wrong? And had the dentist schedule a follow-up to undo and redo the cavity filling? And then, in the days leading up to the appointment (and about a month after the original filling), noticed the pain goes away? Has anyone ever had that? I'm totally just curious, that's all. Completely hypothetical.

I did! I had a really bad one a few years ago and I swear it hurt more after he filled it than before. My dentist said it was just everything figuring out where it all needed to go.
No fun.

I couldn't say whether that has hypothetically/actually happened to me. I tend to repress all dentist-related memories. I'm glad the hypothetical pain went away, though!

Oh My! I had a cavity filled just about two weeks ago. It ended up being a really deep one and I have not been able to eat on that side at all, I get headaches from it, even went to the dentist here in Florida (free of charge...he was so nice), and still nothing. He thought that my bite might have been off and so he shaved things down a bit (OWWWWWW), but that hasnt really solved anything. He said that if the pain doesnt go away, I could be in need of a root canal!!! I am praying that that is not the case!!!

in a word, no.

Never happened to me before- hmmm. I would think it should feel better right away. You know my dad is the best dentist in the world. People travel from Houston to come see him- PA isn't that much farther ;) He's called the painfree dentist.

Funny dentist story- a gal in my ward who was 14 was asked if she'd ever had a shot at the dentist. She said no. So they asked again "So you've never been numbed??" She said "oh yeah, but Dr Feil (my dad) just does this thing where he shakes my cheek and it goes numb." lol, that's what he does when he gives the shot so you can't feel it, lol. Funny girl thought he had some super Spock move of something, lol.

I hope your pain stays away- hypothetically of course.

Tooth pain is just an all around bummer! I've had a ton of cavities in my life but I don't ever remember any pain after they filled it. Ibuprofin is generally my answer with toothaches.

Thanks, everyone!

Jill, how long did it take to go away?

Lindsay, so glad you found a nice, free dentist like that!

Lena, what a cool idea! Say, where in Texas are you, by the way?

I have a funny, similar story to yours, Lena. At the dentist, he used some big technical term with me to describe how he'd help it not hurt (I don't remember it, so I'm making this one up).

Dentist: I'm going to use the "Applied Pain Sensitization Block" to help you not feel the pain of the shot.

Me: Oh. What's that?

Dentist: It's where I put the needle in while jiggling your cheek.

Me: Oh, that!

Dentist: What do you call it?

Me: Jiggling your cheek.

Lol, I love it! I'm between Dallas and Fort Worth in a nice little town that is getting to be not-so-little anymore.

Stacy,
I have had this happen on more than one occasion.... BUT I also have super-sensitive teeth. AND, I also have a huge dentist phobia.

Ultimately, though, the pain always resolves itself gradually over about 3 weeks or so. (As much as I hate to say it, I think in my case it's at least partially psychosomatic....) :-)

In fact, my phobia of the dentist is so VERY severe, I once fainted from FRIGHT at the dentist (at the age of 21). Pathetic (and humorous), I know. Luckily, it's nowhere near that bad now...

Good luck! (Hypothetically speaking, of course...) :-)

Thanks, Lena! We're doing a homeschool road trip in the next year or two and we'll be near there. It'd be fun to meet!! We also have friends in Temple and San Antonio. Cool, eh?

HWHL, THANK YOU!! That's a relief to hear (about how long the pain can last, not about you fainting!). I don't think you're alone in the dentist phobia category!!

I can't say I've ever had that "hypothetical" experience. However, once I went to the dentist for a root canal and after the procedure my tooth still hurt like mad for days. I went back to the dentist and instead of suggesting that he might have perhaps doctored up the wrong tooth, he informed me that I had developed nerve damage in the neighboring tooth as well. How convenient (as in several hundred dollars worth of convenience).
