The Hits Keep Coming

Stacy is in the clinic today so I figured I'd make dinner. Since our half-hog goes to the butcher on Monday (someone else's half-hog will also go, attached to ours) we also have to clear out space in our extra freezer, so I found a few things to make: a box of Dijon encrusted salmon fillets (purchased at Aldi), pasta salad from our business barbecue (frozen solid), and a gigantic bag of broccoli (also frozen). Somewhere along the line I ended up burning the salmon, thus drying it quite a bit. The pasta didn't completely defrost, so there were frequent bites with ice crystals, and the broccoli didn't quite steam completely so it was on the crisp side. I'm not usually this inept in the kitchen, but today was the perfect storm.

So, apologetically, between carbon-enhanced bites, I say, "I feel like this meal is lame."

To which, Thing 2 responds, "It's not lame. I'll tell you what's lame--what you just said is lame."

And there you have it.

What a cool kid!

Ugh! I can relate to cooking disasters. Unfortunately I have them ALL the time!

Are you saying that everything that comes out of a Foley oven or off a Foley stove is not always a gourmet wonder?

I tend to stick with grilled cheese and pancakes most of the time. I need Maxim to boost my confidence.

Have you ever bought a hog before? We're thinking about buying a quarter of a beef this year for the first time. Unfortunately we don't have an extra freezer, but we may do it anyway. Decisions...

What great children. Even if I wasn't the Vavo I would still feel the same.

No, not everything in our kitchen ends up being magazine cover worthy. It's just nice to have the wisdom of youth to put things in perspective.

Yes, we've bought a hog before and it's WONDERFUL! The meat is so tasty and tender and there are no nasty hormones and they are grass-fed and have plenty of space to move and roam. It's great! Our friends have a farm and raise them for us, we tell the processor what we'd like from our meat (roasts, chops, bacon, sausage, ham, etc.) and we pick it up and fill our freezer and eat it all winter. It's great! That extra freezer is great -- we use it for veggies and berries in the summer, too. And leftovers.
