Books

So, I think that 3 of my favorite books so far this year include:

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Olive Kitteridge
Girl with a Pearl Earring

I should also add that I also enjoyed my own 2009 NaNoWriMo novel (I recently re-read it and have to admit I enjoyed it!).

But I'm about to read The Hunger Games and I've heard great things.

What are you favorites so far this year?

I also am re-reading the Hunger Games trilogy (the 3rd one for the first time as soon as I get it back from being loaned out!) - *LOVE* those books so far, I'm curious about the 3rd one since I've heard mixed reviews.

Checking my Goodreads list, this year I gave 5 stars to:
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
The "These Is My Words" trilogy by Nancy E. Turner
Columbine by Dave Cullen
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer
Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang
The Tapestry Series (books 1 & 2) by Henry H. Neff

Wow, that's not very many 5 star books for a whole year! But I've read a lot of books I've enjoyed, those are just the highlights.

I finished all three of Hunger Games in about a week. I really liked all 3 and also heard mixed reviews, but just went in with an open mind. I am in the middle of the Hobbit right now and like it, just taking time to get into it. I also read the Glass Castle which I thought was awesome along with Half Broke Horses. Heidi was another must of this year. I also read all of Harry Potter this summer and was totally in love with those books!

No favorites this year (nothing new anyway) but I've heard good things about the Girl with a Pearl Earring. I'll have to check it out.

Wait, I just read the first comment. I did love The Help. Thought it was really well-written and so thought provoking. I was shocked to find out that the author was white, to be honest.

I read Girl With a Pearl Earring a few years back and loved it. I did not, however, love any of Tracy Chevalier's other books.

I've read so many, many books this year, I'm not certain what my favorites are. But off the top of my head, I remember enjoying The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley and North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell (though that one took me AWHILE to get into). Oh, and the Fablehaven series was fun youth lit. I'm sure there are many, many others. I will have to ponder.

I enjoyed Hunger Games, but only the first one. It declined after the first one. I enjoyed Three Cups of Tea (have you read that one yet? For some reason, I think you would LOVE it).

I also LOVED, I mean LOVED, The Help. It was meaningful to me for a number of reasons. I think you would also find it well written and interesting.

Girl with the Pearl Earring was great, and I adored The Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

Currently, I am working on the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It is too early to tell...

I've read almost all the books in these earlier comments, loved all except Girl w/ Dragon Tattoo... rated R, just like the movie. =( I was so sad, had to take it back to the library. Reading The Hourglass Door & it's sequel - love it so far. You have to love the Hunger Games series... #3 is up for interpretation. I liked the Mortal Instruments series & then the prequel Clockwork Angel. The Maze Runner is awesome: kind of Holes meets Hunger Games. Hopefully there is a sequel. Artemis Fowl just got a book #7, have it requested; Trying FarWorld on CD - so far it's fairly fair. I'm excited to try the few above that I haven't read. I love these kinds of posts - Thank you. =)

Ohhhh, these comments are all so good!!

Robynne and Lindsay, we read Jeannette Walls in book club (her Half-Broke Horses) and several people read The Glass Castle as well afterward (or before). :P

Emily, I liked it a lot. I thought it was a cool concept for a book, too. We got my Mom "The Help" for Christmas. She loved it.

Lbs, oh, I forgot about Sweetness! But I think I already commented to say that. :P

Jess, you've got to check out our book club blog and look at the "Food for Thought Picks" -- those are the top 2 vote getters for every year. You seem to really like the same ones as us! Go figure. Have you read "The Thirteenth Tale" yet? I forget . . .

Terah, I've heard good things about "Three Cups of Tea" -- thanks for the recommendation! What did you think of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?"

Melanie, wow! You have a lot of good recommendations! Thank you!! Let me know what you think of some of the above recommendations. I love posts like these, too. :)
