Recent Reads

Besides watching copious amounts of Gilmore Girls, I've also been doing a fair amount of reading.

A few books I've recently read:

Water for Elephants -- loved it, loved it, LOVED it!

The Help
-- Excellent! Great characters -- missed them when I was done.

The Elegance of the Hedgehog
-- reserving comments on this one
(it's one of the books in the SIL book club my MIL gave us all for Christmas, so I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't gotten it yet)

The Best Halloween Ever
-- fun read for this time of year; it's written by Barbara Robinson of "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" fame; her Christmas book is better, but this one is okay

Currently reading:

The Book Thief -- jury's still out; I'm intrigued -- I've heard good things and it's an interesting concept, but not loving the guy's writing style so far . . .

Have you read any good books lately?

I thought Water for Elephants was interesting, but I don't think I loved it. I did, however, LOVE the Help.

IMO The Book Thief is way overrated because the concept is so good. I just got really worn out amd felt like he didn't quite get what was in his head down on the page.

That's exactly how I'm feeling about The Book Thief at the moment . . . it's got rave reviews on Amazon, but I find myself agreeing more with the 1-star reviews myself.

And, I should add, I WANT to like it, but UGH.

The Book Thief stuck with me,one scene in particular, when the Jews are being marched through the streets.

I liked Water for Elephants, it was good, but not my favorite. I had a hard time with The Help, mainly due to the "Southern" language. I am trying to read The Book Thief right now, I am having a hard time with it, mainly because it seems a little disconnected to me. I think as far has reading about the holocaust I will stick with Night by Elie Wiesel.

Liked Water for Elephants, but don't remember loving it.

Haven't read the Help yet, but want to.

I was wondering what the hold up was on the SIL books. ;) The last one I read was The Glass Castle. Which was haunting.

Still a fan of Book Thief. Not only did I like the unique narrative perspective, but it was a new perspective of looking at the Holocaust. Not that I don't LOVE Night, Maus, and Man's Search...but I thought it was interesting to see it from a non-Jewish, German position. I can totally see how people don't click with it though.

Jimmy, thought of you when I got to that part.

Oooh, Kim, also try "Boy in the Striped Pajamas."

Jess, you'll love "The Help." Yep, I'm totally holding us up. :P I'm reading TGC now (but where are your notes?!?).
