Happy Birthday, Little Miss!

(WARNING! This is not Stacy! But please, keep reading.)

It's arrived, amidst very little fanfare and excitement, but it has arrived nonetheless. My wife's birthday is today, and we're going to celebrate.

For those of you who know, Stacy loves to celebrate birthdays--first ones, important ones, milestones, themes--it doesn't really matter, as long as there is something to mark the occasion. This is one thing where we couldn't have been more different when we got married.

You see, my birthday is one of three events to occur on the same day in my family of origin. My parent were married. Two years later to the day, I came along. Then two years later, yes, to the day, my brother came along. Four years, three events, still only 24 hours in which to celebrate. Take away 8 hours for sleep, a few for eating, more for showering, working, scratching, whatever, and you're left with about 38 minutes per event. Don't bother checking the math--it's only an estimate. With two parents and 6 siblings there are 8 birthdays plus and an anniversary to celebrate each year (with more events being added all the time). So you can see how making much of a big deal would quickly become cumbersome.

So, I wake up, note the date, and go about my business.

Contrast this with my wife. Her mother, for example, begins celebrating her birthday in June by counting down the 30 days until her birthday. Then she celebrates through July, right past the actual date, and continues through October or so, only to begin reminding people her birthday is coming up "soon." My wife isn't quite so bad, but March 3 is a big deal. Her being a thoughtful and caring person, she wants to make everyone's birthday special. My birthday went from being another date on the calendar to be shared with a few other events to being a large, nearly overdone festivity. Our children have elaborate theme parties, and we have a good time.

I know 34 is not a major milestone. It's not even half-way between 30 and 40. She can't magically do anything today she couldn't do yesterday, a la 16, 18, 21, etc. But it's a special day nonetheless. There will still be breakfast in bed and children to share that breakfast. There will be homemade cards (Oops! I let that secret out of the bag!). There will be a birthday dinner where we eat way too much sushi for 4 people. Let's all celebrate. Let's tell her how grateful we are to have her in our lives.

March 3 is not only the day she was born, 34 years ago, but it is also the date my eventual best friend was introduced to this world. It is the same day that the mother to two wonderful and beautiful children came to be. It is the very same day that someone destined to be an important part of many lives was born.

I for one am grateful to have Stacy in my life and cannot begin to express my love for her here. The best I can do is say Happy Birthday and thank you for all that you are and do.

I love you!

Happy Birthday Stacy! All these years I've enjoyed your annual Christmas Letters, the email updates, and now your blogs. Maybe one day our families will actually be in the same time-zone together and we can all meet-up. I hope this is a very happy birthday for you.

Dear Stacy,
34 years ago today I got the surprise of my life. I had you, and Scott, the name I had all picked out for you became Tracy and then Stacy. Vavô and Vavó could not say Tracy so you became Stacy.
The doctor that delivered you would not tell me if you were a boy or girl until he sang Happy Birthday to you and then only when he sang "baby girrrrl" did he show you so I could see that you were indeed a girl. (Mark I think that is why she loves her birthday. She didn't catch it from me. I think.)
Stacy that was one very special day for me. We already had to many boys in the extended family.
You were like a new toy for us, your brother, cousins Avos and aunts.
You were a great baby. I think you started talking at 2 1/2 months. OK maybe a little later,
but you did start early.
Those were good years. I just wish that your Dad, just once, let me be the one to give you a bath.
You were his bibi right from day one. He died calling you Bibi. You have and are loved by us.
He is probably looking for a phone to tell you Happy Birthday Bibi.
From me I wish you nothing but the best of days today. I love you very much and am so great full for Mark who is the best of men.
Again Happy Birthday sweet face.
Mom

I hope you have a great day, Stacy! That was the sweetest post from Mark, I got a little misty just reading it. I wish we were all a little closer so that we could celebrate with you, but I hope that you have a great time and realize how valued you are.

Stacy-
To think that I met you 15 and a half years ago is insane. I have this picture of a bunch of us from Freshman year that is floating around the house that the boys like to look at. It reminds me of many good times we had. Do you remember the sign for "there's chocolate at the ice cream machine"? I remember smuggling a note into Mark's room for you (a perfumed note if I recall correctly). I remember a compliment you gave me upon coming home one evening after church when Mark was living with me the semester before you guys were married. I actually thought about that last night as I was doing the same thing you had complimented me on.
I honor you Stacy for taking a different path than many choose, even if it is with some trepidation. Courage is acting in spite of fear, you are a courageous woman. I thank you for being the kind of friend that I can be completely honest with and know that I won't be judged. I noticed Zelia posted, I hope she reads this: you guys did a great job; My prayers have been with you over these last months.
Mark you are a lucky man, Kate, Maxim, you have a great Mom.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Stacy.
We sincerely wish we lived closer to you guys so we could get together.
Love-
Aaron

Stacy,
It's your dream come true--a huge stream of comments on your blog! I think it's wonderful how you two always work hard to find ways to make a birthday celebration unique and special. So, push away the details of life, and enjoy yourself for a day! It is certainly well-deserved. Thank you for your continued friendship and influence in my life, even in the face of my substandard communications skills. Happy Birthday.

P.S. I'd like a California roll, and make the soy sauce heavy on the wasabi.

Happy, happy birthday Stacy!

Though we've never met in person, I feel I've come to know you fairly well from our online contact, especially from our time and contact while working together. I've enjoyed hearing about your life, and the challenges you've faced, and the growth you've accomplished, and continue to accomplish. It's a bit like watching a flower grow, and you are, and continue to become, more beautiful than you'll ever know. Thanks so much for being yourself and sharing yourself and your family with me and others in your inimitable open and honest way. Your family is very fortunate to have you as its maternal center, and your clients are very fortunate to have found such a caring therapist.

May your life continue to blossom into an ever-expanding garden of love, life, and light.

Do you recall what I said in response to your frustration shortly after you married into the Foley family? If not, I'll remind you. I said you better get used to it because you're a Foley now. I hope if the prophecy was correct you can at least enjoy Christmas...oh, and your birthday too.

Happy birthday Stacy. This blog stuff is so foreign to me :). Hopefully this gets to you okay! I know you have had a wonderful day, you get so much joy out of life. You are a wonderful example. Don't you still feel like 19 though. I mean we've gone through too much to be only 19 in the last 15 years but that excitement and joy of being 19, as if life still has so much to offer us and visa versa! Things have changed so much since the last birthday I called you four years ago. Thank goodness the darkness lifts!
Have a huge awful lawful for me! I'm off chocolate AHHHHH! Anyway. I'm sure your dad and vavu are having one too :) I love you make sure you let me know when you're in town again.
love,
Kora

Happy Birthday, Stacy. But seriously, it's today? I swear that it was March 5th. I've had it down as March 5th on calendar for as long as I can remember. The day after my brother's birthday, not before. Well whatever day it is why don't you go ahead and celebrate the whole week! Happy birthweek!

HAPPY DAY-AFTER-YOUR-BIRTHDAY! From Mark's description of your birthday celebration traditions, I'm assuming the celebrating is still going on, so I hope I'm not too late with this post. I've known you for almost four years and you have been a breath of fresh air. I love to talk with you; not only are you a lot of fun, but you're very insightful--I feel like aI gain a lot every time we have a conversation. Thanks for being such a friend--everyone should be as lucky as I feel I am to have such a friend. I trust the sushi was wonderful and that you ate a goodly amount. Enjoy the post-birthday day. Love, Pat

Stacy...Happy Birthday girl! I wish we were there to celebrate with you, but Jared would eat all the sushi so it's probably for the best that we're miles away. So glad I know about your blog now. One of these days I plan to go back through your entries so I can get caught up on your life again. You truly know how to be a good friend. I miss you and think about you a lot. Hope your birthday is everything you want it to be.
