Movie Recommendations

Seen any good movies recently? I mean, I know the classics of course (though feel free to throw those in the comments, too). I'm talking movies within the past year or so. Movies we can rent from the Redbox. Movies that are a nice distraction from daily stresses. Any suggestions? (Remember I'm sick and feel like crud. So once the kids are in bed, Mark and I might watch a movie. If you can suggest something good. No pressure.).

Ok--there are a lot of movies that I have loved, but I don't know what you are looking for.

ONCE--skip the very first scene where he is on the streets of Dublin (and swears a bit) and the rest of the movie I can recommend without hesitation.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE-- A 1970s-esque musical with songs by the Beatles (but redone). If you like musicals, you'll love it.

BECOMING JANE--Anne Hathaway as Jane Austen, and James McAvoy as her one suitor and the inspiration of Mr. Darcy. I can't get enough of it.

along the same lines....

JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB--I didn't like the book, but the movie was quite good. And I love Austen, so I am easy to please in that realm.

one of my favorite oldies, but goodies--

ABOUT A BOY--ironic, heartfelt, British, funny, serious...I can watch it over and over!!

Thanks, guys! Keep 'em coming!

I haven't even heard of ONCE! I do love Becoming Jane. And I've also seen ABOUT A BOY. I have the book THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB but haven't read it nor have I seen the movie, but I'm intrigued.

And Lena, those 2 are classics. Thanks!

We have recently enjoyed "Dan in Real Life" with Steve Carell, and also "Stardust." Some of my favorite lesser knowns are, "Waking Ned Divine" and "Simon Birch." Those should keep you busy for a while!

Jessica, it's so interesting to me how similar our reading/viewing tastes are. We also like "Dan in Real Life" and we LOVE "Waking Ned Devine!" Have to admit that we haven't seen the other two yet.

Do you like Philippa Gregory's stuff? The Other Boleyn Girl is visually stunning!

First and foremost "Bella". LOVED, loved, loved (have I mentioned LOVED??!!) that movie. Beautiful, heart-warming and will stay with you.... I still think about the 2 characters all the time. (And it's based on a true story.)

Let's see... what else... (going through my mental rolodex, here...)

Have you seen "Waitress"? I loved Waitress. Also loved "Juno".

If you enjoy comedies, my all time favorite comedy is "Best in Show". (esp if you're a dog person.... it's hilarious.... a Christopher Guest 'mockumentary about a dog show that is funnier every time I watch it).

"Sideways" is very funny. Hard to beat Paul Giamatti's neuroses in that one....that's a couple years old now, but really a great movie.

I'm sure I'll think of others.

(Oh, and by the way - your kids would really like "Kung Fu Panda"... still in the theaters of course, but very, very very funny.)

Yes! We've seen Waitress, Juno, and Bella--all very good. You know my type of quirky movies! ;)

Haven't seen the others--thanks for the recommendations!

Oh! Yay! I get to watch Bella tonight with my sis, I can't wait! I loved Waitress and Juno too. I have a tie between Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman...Christopher Guest is my best friend in another life.

I also LOVE Strictly Ballroom.

If you want the cheesiest movie experience of your life....you've got to try Xanadu, with Olivia Newton-John. It's a family favorite. My cousins and I just watched it this weekend! Ah, roller skates and leg warmers, a time when life was simple!

Oooh, I can recommend Strictly Ballroom. That was a fun movie.

My husband never have time to watch movies, so I haven't seen any lately.

Did you catch any of those Jane Austen movies on Masterpiece earlier this year. I recorded all of those if you're interested in having DVD's of any of them. There was Sense & Sensibility, Persuasion, Northanger Abbey, Emma, Mansfield Park. My favorites were S & S and Persuasion. Let me know if you're interested.

Oh my! Thanks, bythelbs! Wowzers, what an offer! I'm intrigued. I didn't catch any of them (only bits and pieces at my Uncle's house once). Are these different than the BBC versions?

I'm having difficulty remembering if I've ever seen Strictly Ballroom. I think I have but I don't remember and it seems I ought to remember (the older I get, the more I think I've had depression over the years--even when much younger without knowing it--and my memory is very fuzzy/hazy during those times--could it be that?). Why do I talk so much?

Anyway, I've IMDBed it and I see that it's by the same guy who did Moulin Rouge and I love Moulin Rouge, so I'm reserving Strictly Ballroom at the library right now!

I think the Sense & Sensibility and Persuasion were new at least. Those were my favorites. They had Pride & Prejudice, the A&E version, but I already had that on DVD so I didn't record it.

E-mail me your home address and those other two are yours.

I don't know why you are still surprised by our similar tastes! I have been wanting to see "The Other Boleyn Girl," but I need to read the book first. I'm just like that, you know. But I like Philippa Gregory. I read "The Queen's Fool," and really liked it! I so enjoy a good historical fiction!

I read "The Other Boleyn Girl" and liked it overall. It got a bit long in parts but like I said, I liked it. A word of warning, a lot of historians say it's more fiction than historical, but when it's a good story it doesn't matter all that much.

Oh I'm not surprised by our similar tastes. I think it's great. :)

Mark, we've got to get the movie. I wonder what you'll think compared to the book. The acting was fantastic. It's well cast. And it really is visually stunning. (Obviously I haven't read the book--I'm guessing a lot got cut out since the book is long and the movie not so much).
